This course will provide an opportunity for you to continue to learn, apply and extend the skills and techniques learned on a Beginners course in oil painting. The course takes a methodical approach to teaching the elements of oil painting through projects that explore a particular aspect of technique, style or artist's work, step by step. You will learn about various artists' work, artistic movements or genres that will stimulate and inform your work.
By the end of the course, you should be able to:
1) Use the skills of recording and developing ideas to create a personal sketch book.
2) Explain and understand the ideas and influences of past masters/contemporary artists in relations to the development of their own works.
3) Plan and produce works which show the use of the essential elements in Drawing/painting, line, shape, volume, tone,colour.
4) Through talks, discussions and group critiques/gain skills of evaluating and analysing own/peers work.
5) Demonstrate successful use of oil painting techniques with relevant tools, equipment and resources
6) Be aware of and work to relevant Health and Safety guidelines

Who is the tutor?
About the Tutor: Duncan Kings
Duncan Kings is a painter, printmaker, ceramicist and sculptor. He studied BA Fine Art at Maidstone and MA printmaking at Chelsea Art School. He works in a broad range of media, materials and techniques and has been teaching art and design for over 30 years. Duncan regularly exhibits and his work is on permanent display at the Derby Museum, Shepherd and Neame Brewery and the Leicester Regiment, and he has also worked on large scale murals. Duncan works to commission and examples of his work can be found at www.duncankings.co.uk
How will I be taught?
The tutor will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will look at the work of contemporary and historical artists and you will keep a sketchbook/notebook and individual learning plan (ILP) to record your goals, ideas, processes and progress. One to one guidance, group critiques, self-assessment against individualised learning outcomes stated on the ILP
What do I need to bring with me?
If you are a new student and have no materials please wait for your tutor's advice on what to buy. However, all students should bring an A4 sketchbook of good quality cartridge paper, preferably with a hard cover and ring bound and a variety of pencils.You will need to provide your own materials and these will vary in cost according to the course requirements. Some of our centres have their own ‘shops' where you are able to buy things at competitive prices. If you have any materials/equipment that might be appropriate please bring them with you.
What can I do next?
During your course, your tutor will offer guidance in your personal progression route.
Courses are designed to progress students to higher levels of the Art. In addition, our courses support application to "Access to Degree Foundation courses" leading to Higher Education opportunities.

What do I need to join the course
This is for more experienced art students.
Students who have completed the Beginners course or have the equivalent experience.It is important to note that art courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity for you to participate fully and get the most out of the course.
