A course to develop your drawing skills. Using a variety of drawing media and materials, e.g. pencil, charcoal, ink, you will explore a range of mark making possibilities, and will gain confidence in using the formal elements - line, tone, texture and composition. By working from both direct observation and from photographic references and sketches, you will encounter a variety of interesting and stimulating subject matter - landscape, still life, natural forms, etc. Reference will also be made to the work of other artists as appropriate.
By the end of this course you should be able to:
Work from a variety of primary and secondary subject matter.
Produce drawings that demonstrate a basic awareness of the formal elements.
Select and use the appropriate drawing media and materials.
Recognise the drawing styles and techniques of selected fine artists.
Who is the tutor?
About the Tutor: Claire Adams
Claire Adams is a practising artist/illustrator and tutor of art. Her artwork has been exhibited widely nationally; and abroad. Claire teaches a variety of general drawing, painting and mixed media courses, from beginners to advanced level, including Botanical Art.
How will I be taught?
Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will look at the work of contemporary and historical artists and you will keep a sketchbook/notebook and individual learning plan (ILP) to record goals, ideas, processes and progress. Students will need to understand the potential benefit from the programme of study, read and interpret ideas, communicate responses that are clear, logical and understandable and manage your own time. You will undertake critical reflection and evaluation and be motivated to develop creative skills and enhance/develop personal skills.
What do I need to bring with me?
If you are a new student and have no materials please wait for your tutor's advice on what to buy. However, all students should bring an A4 sketchbook of good quality cartridge paper, preferably with a hard cover and ring bound and a variety of pencils. You will need to provide your own materials and these will vary in cost according to the course requirements. Some of our centres have their own ‘shops' where you are able to buy things at competitive prices.If you have any materials/equipment that might be appropriate please bring them with you.

What do I need to join the course
Everyone is welcome. No previous knowledge or experience needed.
It is important to note that art courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity.
