This is an online course delivered using Zoom, in real time with live interaction with your tutor and fellow learners.

This course will explore portraits from the Renaissance – Seventeenth centuries and the stories and symbolism behind them. Students will have the opportunity to discover the development of portraiture and paintings of the figure throughout these eras and their relevance within art history. In addition, the course will present how some artists were able to challenge conventional ideas and depict themselves and others in unexpected and creative ways. There will also be the opportunity to consider the approaches made by artists in more recent times.

Featured artists will include: Hans Holbein, Van Eyck, Sofonisba Anguissola, Johann Vermeer and Joshua Reynolds plus comparisons with other relevant artists.

Learning Outcomes:
• Demonstrate a knowledge of different portrait and figurative artists
• Identify art styles relevant to individual artist
• Recognise how specific artists challenged conventions
• Develop and justify point of view
• Take part in discussion with other students

Who is the tutor?

About the Tutor: Deborah Crofts

Deborah Crofts is a practicing artist with a studio on the South Coast of Kent. She has a BA Fine Art from the University of East London and a PGCE gained at the University of Greenwich.

How will I be taught?

This course will be delivered online. You will join the class from home and be able to exchange and interact with other learners as you would in the classroom (speaking and listening).

There will be illustrated lectures, group work and discussion.

What do I need to join the course

There are no specific requirements to join this course.

You can access the class from your computer equipped with a camera and a microphone, from a laptop (where the camera and microphone should be built-in), a tablet or a smartphone.
