In this course we will see how tarot cards evolved, as well as the development of new printing and reproduction techniques. You will gain understanding of different decks and cards in relation to art history; being able to decode the story behind each arcana, recognising a general pattern of representation as well as looking at how symbology and aesthetics of these decks varied depending on the geography, historical period and purpose of the deck.
The course is open to anyone wanting to learn about this tool that has been around for centuries; inspiring artists, therapists, philosophers throughout generations. We will cover the history of tarot and its evolution whilst exploring the symbology behind the arcana and the archetypes they represent. We will cover socio-cultural contexts of specific decks throughout history to better understand the differences between their symbology and the visual languages that they evoke.
