Art History - Looking at Pictures

Day of week:
The Amelia , Tunbridge Wells
Mixed Level
10:00 - 12:00
6 weeks

Have you ever visited an art gallery or exhibition and wished you understood more about the works on display? Then this could be the course for you. It’s designed for those who know a bit about art but want to know more. Each week, a single painting is taken as the starting point and, over the weeks, the course builds into an overview of art history, leading art movements, and an understanding of different styles and techniques.
By the end of the course, you will have developed enough knowledge and insight to make future trips to art galleries and exhibitions even more rewarding. Many of the pictures and artists we will be looking at are on display in collections in London, should you wish to go and view them with fresh eyes once you have completed the course.
We will be looking at:
How Van Gogh used colour in his Sunflowers
Vermeer’s use of light in The Girl with the Pearl Earring
The many possible hidden meanings in Jan Van Eyck’s The Arnolfini Portrait
Claude Monet’s brushwork in The Thames below Westminster
The political message of Picasso’s Weeping Woman
The story behind Leonardo da Vinci’s The Virgin of the Rocks

Learning outcomes for the course include:
An overview and insight into of the life, times and works of the chosen artists
