This course will explore portraits and paintings of people from Modernism to the Contemporary period and the stories and symbolism behind them. Students will have the opportunity to discover the development of portraiture and paintings of the figure throughout these eras and their relevance within art history. In addition, the course will present how recent artists have been able to challenge conventional ideas and depict themselves and others in unexpected and creative ways. Featured artists will include: Frida Kahlo, Lucian Freud, David Hockney, Billy Childish and Jenny Saville, plus comparisons with other relevant artists.
• Demonstrate a knowledge of different portrait and figurative artists
• Identify art styles relevant to individual artist
• Recognise how specific artists challenged conventions
• Develop and justify point of view
• Take part in discussion with other students
Who is the tutor?
About the Tutor: Deborah Crofts
Deborah Crofts is a practicing artist with a studio on the South Coast of Kent. She has a BA Fine Art from the University of East London and a PGCE gained at the University of Greenwich.
How will I be taught?
Our art appreciation courses provide an opportunity for students to acquire an understanding of the artist(s), craftsperson/craftspeople and/or movement being studied. Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods, including delivering a lecture, showing images and/or artefacts, whole and small group discussions, and guidance for independent research.
What do I need to bring with me?
Notebook and pen.
