Who is the tutor?

About the Tutor: Clare Langlands

Clare is a painter and printmaker and has been a practising artist for more than twenty years. She studied BA FIne Art at Newcastle upon Tyne Polytechnic and was awarded a postgraduate scholarship to study at The School of Fine Arts, Athens. Clare has exhibited her work both locally and in London. Her pictures combine figurative motifs with abstract mark making, bold colours and pattern to create decorative, playful images. She works in oil paints, printmaking and collage and sometimes combines the processes to create intricate, layered surfaces on canvas. Clare is an experienced teacher with a PGCE in Art and Design from Goldsmiths University.

How will I be taught?

Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will look at the work of contemporary and historical artists and you will keep a sketchbook/notebook and individual learning plan (ILP) to record goals, ideas, processes and progress.

What do I need to have with me?

If you are a new student and have no materials please wait for your tutor's advice on what to buy. However all students should bring an A4 sketchbook of good quality cartridge paper, a 2B pencil and a rubber to the first session. If you do not have these already, please do not buy anything specifically for the course until you have checked with the Canterbury Centre, on 03000 412222 about a week before the start, that the course will be going ahead. Students will need to provide their own materials as the course progresses.

What can I do next?

A further drawing or drawing and painting course.
