This three hour Introductory course introduces learners to the art and craft of handbound books. Learn how to make a soft-cover pamphlet, Japanese stab-stitch binding, and a concertina book. The techniques explored provide a useful overview of some basic skills used in craft binding. This session is ideal for beginners or for those who might like to meet the tutor before going on to further bookbinding classes. All materials and tools are provided for this taster session.
By the end of this course, you should be able to:
Identify grain direction in paper and explain its importance in bookbinding
Fold and cut paper safely and with accuracy
Bind books by hand using two sewing techniques
Apply adhesive cleanly and accurately
Discuss ideas for future structures based on learning

How will I be taught?
Our courses are taught by qualified and experienced tutors.
Bookbinding sessions are taught through demonstration of techniques and practical hands-on support with both 121 and group guidance and critique.
What do I need to bring with me?
The materials and equipment will be provided as part of the course.
If you like to take notes, please bring something to do so. There is close work in Bookbinding and an apron may be useful to protect your clothes.

Further Craft courses with KAE or extend your Bookbinding knowledge with another longer course.
Learners can attend further bookbinding classes.
A basic bookbinding kit will be available to order from your tutor at the end of the taster session for those who wish to attend future sessions.
What do I need to join the course
Just have an interest in Bookbinding and would like to have an experience of using the craft.
It is important to note that craft courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity. If you need to bring a carer with you, or be accompanied by another person, please ask to speak with the Curriculum Leader.
