This three hour Introductory course introduces learners to the art and craft of handbound books. Learn how to make a soft-cover pamphlet, Japanese stab-stitch binding, and a concertina book. The techniques explored provide a useful overview of some basic skills used in craft binding. This session is ideal for beginners or for those who might like to meet the tutor before going on to further bookbinding classes. All materials and tools are provided for this taster session.
By the end of this course, you should be able to:
Identify grain direction in paper and explain its importance in bookbinding
Fold and cut paper safely and with accuracy
Bind books by hand using two sewing techniques
Apply adhesive cleanly and accurately
Discuss ideas for future structures based on learning
