Bookbinding - Japanese - Stab Bindings and Albums

This three week course introduces learners to the craft of Japanese inspired handbound books.

Learn the basic procedure and variations to make four Stab bound books and a wraparound case.

Techniques explored provide an overview of some basic skills and tools used in craft binding.

These sessions are ideal for beginners or for those wishing to enhance their creative practice with bookbinding skills.

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

Identify grain direction in paper and explain its importance in bookbinding
Fold and cut paper safely and with accuracy
Bind bookblocks by hand using varied sewing techniques
Apply adhesive cleanly and accurately
Measure and cut board accurately
Recognise and use vocabulary of bookbinding
Identify bookbinding tools and demonstrate their uses
Discuss ideas for future structures based on learning gained during this course

How will I be taught?

Our courses are taught by qualified and experienced tutors.
Bookbinding sessions are taught through demonstration of techniques and practical hands-on support with both 121 and group guidance and critique.

What do I need to bring with me?

If you like to take notes, please bring something to do so. There is close work in Bookbinding and an apron may be useful to protect your clothes.

The basic materials and equipment will be provided as part of the course. However, a full Bookbinding kit is available to purchase.

A Basic Kit normally includes:
30cm ruler
Large craft knife with retractable blade
Paper Folder (approx' 20cm)
Bookbinding awl
Bookbinding Needles Sizes 15 and 18
Shoe Knife - 115mm
32mm fold back clips x 4
Small glue brush
Large glue brush

What can I do next?

Further Craft courses with KAE or extend your Bookbinding knowledge with another longer course.
Learners can attend further bookbinding classes.

What do I need to join the course

Everyone is welcome and no knowledge or experience is necessary. You just need to have an interest in Bookbinding and would like to have an experience of using the craft.
It is important to note that craft courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity. If you need to bring a carer with you, or be accompanied by another person, please ask to speak with the Curriculum Leader.
