This course is aimed at those who have already had some experience of drawing & painting plants and a good grounding in the formal elements for art. The focus of the course is placed heavily upon the careful observation of a wide variety of plant subjects. Whilst honouring the traditions of Botanical Art there is plenty of opportunity to experiment with innovative techniques and interpretations. Materials used will include pencil, ink, watercolour and gouache. By the end of this course you should be able to: Use a work journal to research and develop your own project ideas, Draw and paint botanical subjects using a range of media and techniques, Mix colours using colour theory to correspond with observed colours., Successfully execute tonal gradation, texture and pattern., Recognise and respond to the work of other botanical artists, Present a portfolio of botanical artwork.
Who is the tutor?
About the Tutor: Claire Adams
Claire Adams is a practising artist/illustrator and tutor of art. Her artwork has been exhibited widely nationally; and abroad. Claire teaches a variety of general drawing, painting and mixed media courses, from beginners to advanced level, including Botanical Art.
How will I be taught?
Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will look at the work of contemporary and historical artists and you will keep a sketchbook/notebook and individual learning plan (ILP) to record goals, ideas, processes and progress.Students will need to understand the potential benefit from the programme of study, read and interpret ideas, communicate responses that are clear, logical and understandable and manage your own time. You will undertake critical reflection and evaluation and be motivated to develop creative skills and enhance/develop personal skills.
What do I need to bring with me?
If you are a new student and have no materials please wait for your tutor's advice on what to buy. However, all students should bring an A4 sketchbook of good quality cartridge paper, preferably with a hard cover and ring bound, and a variety of graphite pencils (4H -6B). You will need to provide your own materials and these will vary in cost according to the course requirements. Some of our centres have their own ‘shops' where you are able to buy things at competitive prices.If you have any materials/equipment that might be appropriate please bring them with you.
What can I do next?
Courses are designed to progress students to higher levels of the Art and also to support application to Access to Art and Degree Foundation courses or relevant Art, Craft and Design Degree courses.
What do I need to join the course
Students who have completed a Beginners Botanical/art course & have a passion for plants. It is important to note that art courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity.
