This traditional calligraphy introduction is for complete beginners and for students with some experience who have not yet learned the Foundational Hand. Improvers wishing to refresh their skills are also welcome.
The Foundational Hand is a classic round hand script, based on the famous calligrapher, Edward Johnston’s letterforms, it’s an excellent starting point for beginners. The tutor will give a brief introduction looking at the historical context of this script and setting up your workspace.
On this course we will study a modern form of this script. Starting with pen patterns using calligraphy felt tip pen, as a fun and creative introduction to broad-edged pen.
By the end of the course you will be able to;
-Practical calligraphy using a broad-edged felt tip pen t, and
- Demonstrate pen patterns using calligraphy broad - edge felt tip pen o make letters in the beautiful lower case Foundational hand
- Create pen strokes that make the associated Roman Letters
- Design and create a card or nameplate,

How will I be taught?
Your tutor will use a variety of teaching methods including group demonstrations, individual tuition and handouts. It is recommended that you keep a work folder for your handouts and make notes for future reference.
Homework: Some practice between the two sessions is necessary in order to make progress with this course.
What do I need to bring with me?
If you have done some calligraphy before, please bring your usual calligraphy equipment, including your dip pens, ink and A3 layout paper.

What do I need to join the course
Your first calligraphy felt tip pens, nibs, and layout paper will be available to purchase from your tutor. During your first session your tutor will explain and provide a list of equipment and materials that may be useful for future progression. Penholders for dip pens and ink will also be available to purchase if you wish to progress further at home, or join another course.
NB. Prices may vary according to what is available at the time, but a calligraphy felt tip pen is approx. £3.00 and a nib and pen holder (optional) approx. £6.
Improvers wishing to refresh their skills are also welcome.
