This Chinese Beginners Summer course is designed for students who would like occasions to practise
the language at beginners level. It is also suggested as a continuation if you have been studying
Chinese Mandarin in the past or through an app but have not had the opportunity to continue. This
course is for students who already know some basics or have attended Chinese Beginners Modular in
the past. This course will help you to progress to the next level which is a Beginners Plus course.
The focus will be on: Pronunciations Accuracy, Beginners level Listening Comprehension & Speaking

Proposed course learning outcome:
This course aims to build on students current basic skills from previous courses for Beginners and Returners, to consolidate at a Beginners pace, prepare to progress to the next level which is a Beginners Plus course.
- exchange information about self, work and life
- express likes and dislikes / agreements and disagreements
- exchange information about past events
- describe appearance and personalities
- explain simple health problems
- ask & give simple directions / getting around
- consolidate grammar
- improve accuracy, pronunciation and speed of speech

Students are expected to improve from their starting point on the following skills:
- Respond to peers rather than tutor
- Refine pronunciation and intonation
- Start to auto-correct and peer-correct
- Spontaneously participate in dialogues or simple conversations or discussions
- Spontaneously volunteer answers
- Working in groups in the target language
- Using visual clues to find a way to say

How will I be taught?

The focus will be on oral communication (speaking and listening) and some reading and writing of Chinese characters will also be included. Pronunciation, Intonation and Chinese culture are an integral part of the course. The course will be conducted mainly in the foreign appropriate language to your level. Learners will work through different activities individually, in pairs and in small groups, using a variety of learning methods and resources (role-play and games etc). Homework set will provide and opportunity for self study

Initial assessment will be carried out at the beginning of the course to assess individual skill level. Each student's starting point will be recorded on an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and targets will be set. This will be revisited from time to time during the course to monitor and record progress. Tutors will mark homework and give written or verbal feedback.

What do I need to have with me?

The course book will be discussed at the first session if appropriate. Students will need to bring a pen and paper and an A4 ring binder for handouts, although we advise students not to buy anything until after the first session.

The appropriate follow-on course after completion of the 3 modules of Beginners is a Beginners Plus course. The tutor will be able to advise or check

What do I need to join the course

This course is for students who have completed Module A - C, or have already some basic knowledge or vocabulary who want to consolidate at a Beginners pace.
This course is not for absolute beginners.
