Clock Repair - Workshop

This is now a workshop and not suitable for beginners. Students work on their own clocks.
By the end of the course students should be able to:
- Identify two faults which need to be rectified.
- Follow the appropriate procedure twice when taking the clock apart.
- Follow the proper repair procedure on two occasions
- Re-oil correctly after rebuilding one clock movement

Unless stated craft courses do not carry any accreditation.

How will I be taught?

This course provides an opportunity for students to learn and develop skills and techniques necessary to repairing a rnage of clocks. Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstration, instructions, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions. Students will be encouraged to look at the work of other students in the class. It is important to note that craft courses are practical, requiring a degree of manual dexterity. Students will need to participate fully to get the most out of the course. Our courses are taught by qualified and experienced tutors most of whom are practising craftspeople.
There are regular opportunities to discuss your progress, you will also complete an Individual Learning Plan which provides a record with the specific tasks you will/have covered e.g. oil a clock.
There are no set assignments or homework but you may feel able to continue your repairs at home unaided in readiness for the next lesson.

What do I need to bring with me?

Screwdrivers, eye glass, pliers and a clock to repair (preferably a non chiming clock to start), notebook and pencil, a digital camera may also be useful if you have one. The tutor will advise of any extra tools/ materials you will need.

What can I do next?

Futher clock repair courses working on different clocks. Studio Courses are designed to progress students to higher levels of the craft and also to support application to Access to Art and Degree Foundation courses or relevant Craft, Art and Design Degree courses.

What do I need to join the course

Students need some ability in clock repair skills. It is important to note that craft courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity.If you need to bring a carer with you, or be accompanied by another person please ask to speak to a member of staff prior to enrolment.
