This course is delivered online via Zoom with full interaction between the tutor and other students.
This one-day workshop will introduce you, by way of an overview, to key counselling theories and enable you to practice some basic skills needed when supporting others. The course is an ideal introduction and a good insight into further Counselling courses offered.
By the end of the day students should be able to:
1) name at least one of the three listening skills.
2) name at least one of the three core values that underpin effective listening
3) name at least one of the schools of main counselling theory.
Who is the tutor?
About the Tutor: Michael Harris
Michael Harris holds the Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling (person-centred) and studied Levels 2 and 3 with Kent Adult Education in Gravesend. Towards the end of Level 3, Michael was approached to become a tutor for KAE.
Originally employed as a sports teacher and then HR Manager (specialising in Recruitment and Selection), Michael’s previous employment includes over 10 years as an assistant to a Consultant Psychologist in London - undertaking psychological assessments of adults and children in the care system. Michael has extensive experience of utilising counselling skills in his work and has a particular interest in developing knowledge of and working with the Gender, Sexuality and Relationship Diversity Community (GSRD).
Michael holds a Level 3 qualification in Adult Education and Training and has been teaching for KAE since September 2019.

How will I be taught?
The Counselling - Introduction course uses learner-centred teaching in a supportive environment, aiming to help students develop their skills and increase their knowledge.
There are opportunities to discuss your progress with the tutor, who can provide feedback and suggestions.
What do I need to have with me?
It is useful to bring paper and pen for taking notes.
What can I do next?
The next step is Counselling Skills Introduction Award CPCAB Level 2 or Counselling Skills Certficate Level 2 depending on your previous experience in the supportive/helping role. What do I need to join the course
You will need access to a laptop or Smartphone/iPad/Tablet with internet access. You will be sent a Zoom link the day before the course starts.
Anyone interested in self-development and the world of counselling, who needs these skills in their job or in their personal life. No experience is necessary but students must be willing to participate in role play, as we practice basic listening skills which will be set in the context of current counselling theory.
