This course aims to expand a learner’s knowledge of creative music production techniques including creating backing tracks, sampling, making beats, advanced audio and MIDI editing, recording, processing and more. The focus is on creating music using DAW software.
The course will be structured to study a range of different techniques, music examples and topics with regular tasks and structured feedback to support the student to improve. The course will also cover any relevant music theory and analysis.
Aimed at a beginner to intermediate level.
By the end of this course you should be able to:
• Understand and apply new techniques for creating music with relevant technology
• Create backing tracks (at an appropriate level)
• Use production techniques to your advantage
• Understand and implement sampling techniques
• Create your own beats
• Create more advanced music within your DAW

About the Tutor: Ashley Smith
Music and drum tutor practitioner, experienced with live sound and music production based in Folkestone, Kent. Over 10 years experience as a
peripatetic tutor for various schools across East Kent, Leading group classes and one-on-one tuition. Experienced and versatile working musician - theatre productions and original music projects. Commercial
Music graduate. Currently studying for a Masters degree in Popular Music at Goldsmiths University.
How will I be taught?
Our creative courses are taught by qualified and experienced tutors who will use a variety of teaching methods including one to one tutorial guidance, demonstrations, group discussions and critiques.
To benefit fully from this course, students are advised to practice the exercises and pieces in their own time.
You will keep a notebook and update an individual learning plan (ILP) to record goals, ideas, processes and progress. Students will need to understand the potential benefit from the programme of study, read and interpret ideas, communicate responses that are clear, logical and understandable and manage your own time.

Computer equipped with a camera and a microphone, from a laptop (where the camera and microphone should be built-in), a tablet or a smartphone.
Notebook and pen.
DAW software App.

Before each lesson, the tutor may send you by email essential lesson information/handouts for you to consult in advance, and before the class starts, the tutor will have sent you by email an invitation to join, which will be a simple weblink to click. The system is free, secure and easy to use. Should you have questions about the required equipment, please do not hesitate to contact us by telephone or by email. Computer skills necessary. Awareness/experience with a DAW software preferred – if not please consider taking Home Studio Recording course first.
Ideally, the learner will have access to DAW software throughout the course.
