Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling CPCAB Level 4 - Year 1 - Person-Centred Focus (BACP Approved)

Day of week:
Ashford Gateway (KAE), Ashford
Level 4
13:00 - 20:30
30 weeks

Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling (TC-L4) This is year one of a two year course.

This course is BACP Approved. This involves some extra criteria and an exam at the end of Year 2, or once you have completed 70 of your 100 client hours on placement. This element is designed by CPCAB to support qualification standards and enhance the pathway to becoming a registered BACP Counsellor (see for further details). The cost of the course includes the BACP approval.

This qualification will give you the knowledge, skills and competencies to work as a therapeutic counsellor in an agency context. On completion of this 2-year course, you will gain a Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling. For the first year and a half (up to and including the external exam), you will learn in depth about person-centred theory and practice devised by Carl Rogers which focuses on the client finding a resolution to their problems through a non- judgemental environment, so they can freely express any emotions and feelings.

You will strengthen your knowledge of ethical boundaries and the BACP ethical framework.

You will develop a profound understanding and experience of counselling supervision through working as a trainee counsellor in the community within a counselling placement.

A deeper exploration of developing your own self-awareness is an important part of the course. For example
How do you relate to others?
• What do you need to develop within yourself that will enable you to develop the capacity to therapeutically engage with clients?
• What barriers do you hold that serve to reduce your ability to hold and contain a client's emotional pain?
• Explore and challenge your own issues, fears and prejudices in order to work with client diversity.

The cost of the course includes a text book.

How will I be taught?

You will be assessed using various means including written assignments, a weekly reflective journal, presentations and observed practice.

You will be given a Fitness to Practice assessment at the end of year one, and once passed, you will then be responsible for applying to your chosen counselling agency for a placement. You will need to complete 100 hours by the end of year 2 to be fully qualified. Kent Adult Education requires all agencies to provide you with a service framework which includes clinical supervision that meets the BACP guidelines for counsellors in training, as well as line management. CPCAB requires you to have 1.5 hours a month of individual (or group) supervision or 1-hour supervision per 8 hours of client work. In addition, you will require 30-50 hours of group training supervision as part of the course. You will need to pass year 1 before going on to year 2.

In addition, you need to commit to attending and funding up to 60 hours of personal therapy during the 2-year course.

You must attend 90% of the qualification in order to achieve the qualification.

What do I need to bring with me?

You will need a notebook and pens along with access to a computer/ laptop that has Word and a camera.

We recommend that you do not purchase any resources prior to the start of the course. There will eventually be a reading list advised by your tutor/s.

What can I do next?

You can gain BACP accreditation, work towards other CPCAB qualifications at Level 5 including gaining a Supervisor qualification. This will be discussed at the end of the course.

What do I need to join the course

You will already hold Counselling Skills CPCAB Level 2 and Counselling Studies Certificate Level 3 or their equivalents.

If you are a Kent Adult Education student you will need to provide evidence of approval from your Level 3 tutor that you are in the right place educationally and emotionally to continue onto Level 4.

Complete the online application form at the following link

On receipt of your completed application, if you meet requirements, we will arrange for you to have a robust interview with the course tutors and will contact you by email about this. If you are an external applicant, you will be expected to present your Level 3 Certificate and we will seek a reference from your Level 3 tutor.

The interview will involve a discussion and skills practice with the tutors who will also discuss the content and level of the course to ensure it is suitable for you.

Important: There may be more students interviewed than there are places for the course. It is extremely important that you are aware of this. We will choose the best students who interview well, can show how they use their skills, and have confirmation from their previous tutor that they are ready to continue to level 4.

It is recommended that you don't enrol if you have undergone a life-changing experience during the last 12 months. Your emotional stability will be discussed and it is a chance for you to ask questions about the heavy commitment involved in this course.

Please note, there is no opportunity to apply for the Advanced Learner Loan for this course. You can however, spread the cost with our Easy Payment Plan – ask for details or go to our website
