This portrait course will cover drawing and observation skills as well as encouraging experimentation and mixed media working where appropriate. Working from direct observation of the life model, and using pastels, understanding their use and application, students will be introduced to conventional and experimental approaches to drawing the human form using pastels. Students will reference the work of both contemporary and historical artists for styles and techniques.

About the Tutor: Victoria Wainwright
Victoria Wainwright is a professional Artist and Illustrator specialising in pen and ink and printmaking but with a varied background in illustration techniques and briefs. She regularly undertakes commission work where illustration is a feature, and has illustrated a number of published books. Victoria's main interest is in drawing people, capturing their movement and character.
How will I be taught?
Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will look at the work of contemporary and historical artists and you will keep a sketchbook/notebook and individual learning plan (ILP) to record goals, ideas, processes and progress. Students will need to understand the potential benefit from the programme of study, read and interpret ideas, communicate responses that are clear, logical and understandable and manage your own time. You will undertake critical reflection and evaluation and be motivated to develop creative skills and enhance/develop personal skills.
Your tutor will provide feedback, students will also be able to self assess themselves.
What do I need to have with me?
If you are a new student and have no materials please wait for your tutor's advice on what to buy. However, all students should bring an A4 sketchbook of good quality cartridge paper, preferably with a hard cover and ring bound and a variety of pencils. Please do not purchase any materials until you have spoken to your tutor at the first session.
