This course is for complete beginners with little or no knowledge of English. You have a few words but communicate mainly with gestures or a translator. You find it difficult to recognise the English alphabet, write independently or sound out unfamiliar words when reading.
You will learn basic practical English for everyday life and for working in the UK and you will make progress with the basic grammar of English. Speaking, listening, reading and writing are all included, with special emphasis on speaking and listening.
Who is the tutor?
About the Tutor: Juliet Hodson
Juliet is an EFL/ESOL tutor who has worked in English as a foreign language & Adult Education for 17 years. With a wealth of experience in delivering to groups of all levels and nationalities, she provides in-depth learning and self-study for all learners, providing information and guidance on such topics as initial assessment, examinations and extra support.
How will I be taught?
You will work on a variety of activities as a class and in small groups or pairs. This allows the tutor to attend to individual needs as well as to direct the learning of the group as a whole. Homework will be an essential part of the course.
An individual learning plan of work (ILP) is developed between you and the tutor. You will have tutorials with your tutor when you will be able to discuss your progress.
Additionally, your work will be regularly marked by your tutor who will give you oral/written feedback.
What do I need to have with me?
Dictionary, ring-binder for handouts and homework, paper and pen.
What can I do next?
You can progress onto an ESOL L1 course. For further information, you can email us at: learnEnglish@kent.gov.uk
