Exploring the Art of Abstract Painting

‘Exchange realistic descriptions for exciting visual experiences using mark-making, line, composition, colour, texture and much more. Enjoy a series of practical exercises, with a wide range of materials, techniques and tools, that will help you to explore different approaches to abstraction and working in new ways.

This course is designed to encourage a personal response to creating abstract images. Open-ended and investigative, we will explore how materials, concepts and risk taking contribute to making abstract artwork. We will also look at the origins of abstract and consider how your own personal painting and drawing style can develop as a result of taking this course.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

• Select and use a range of materials and methods
• Recognise a variety of abstract styles
• Make experimental abstract studies from a variety of source materials
• Create a range of abstract drawings, paintings’

How will I be taught?

Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will look at the work of contemporary and historical artists and you will keep a sketchbook/notebook & individual learning plan (ILP) to record goals, ideas, processes and progress.Students will need to understand the potential benefit from the programme of study, read and interpret ideas, communicate responses that are clear, logical and understandable and manage your own time. You will undertake critical reflection and evaluation and be motivated to develop creative skills and enhance/develop personal skills.

What do I need to bring with me?

If you are a new student and have no materials please wait for your tutor's advice on what to buy. However, all students should bring an A4 sketchbook of good quality cartridge paper, preferably with a hard cover and ring bound and a variety of pencils.

You will need to provide your own materials and these will vary in cost according to the course requirements.
If you have any materials/equipment that might be appropriate please bring them with you.
