Who were the Gunpowder Plotters and what were their aims? Was the ill-fated plot poorly organised or was the gang betrayed? Why is Guy Fawkes’s name the one we remember and why has he been so vilified through the last 400 years? In this short course, you will learn more about the origins of Guy Fawkes’ Night, by examining the background to the conspiracy and the aftermath of its discovery.
By the end of this course, you should be able to
• Place the Gunpowder Plot within the wider context of British history
• Identify the main conspirators
• Describe the plotters’ aims and plan
• Discuss the possible reasons for the plot and its failure
• Debate the legacy of the Gunpowder Plot
