If you want to learn the skills of how to manipulate oil paint and are new to the media, colour mixing and oil painting techniques then this the Art course for you. The course will cover how to use oil paint and the development of paintings in sketchbooks around tutor led projects. Projects will have a historical content for referencing your Art work. There is a structured but relaxed learning plan which will identify your individual needs to help you reach your goals as you continue to practise and develop skills, working from observation and imagination, including keeping a sketchbook.
By the end of the course you will be able to:
Make choices about subject matter and composition in observational sketches
Create form through painting in monochrome
Use oil paint and solvent in varying consistencies
Use different methods of building up the layers of a painting including ground colour and underpainting
Be aware of and work to relevant Health and Safety guidelines
How will I be taught?
Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will look at the work of contemporary and historical artists and you will keep a sketchbook/notebook and individual learning plan (ILP) to record goals, ideas, processes and progress. You will undertake critical reflection and evaluation and be motivated to develop creative skills and enhance/develop personal skills.
What do I need to bring with me?
If you are a new student and have no materials please wait for your tutor's advice on what to buy. However, you should have an A3 sketchbook of good quality cartridge paper, preferably with a hard cover and ring bound and a variety of pencils. You will need to provide your own materials and these will vary in cost according to the course requirements.
