This pottery course in Deal will give students the opportunity to develop skills to form clay into fired objects.
Each student will be taught methods and techniques to suit their own level and pace.
The pottery studio is well equipped to do hand building work, throwing on a wheel (subject to availability) and has kilns which fire at both stoneware and earthenware temperatures. Students have the choice to make functional or sculptural pieces so long as it is feasible within the course time and the constraints of the pottery studio.
During the course students will cover the following:
- Introduction to clay
- identify and demonstrate clay preparation techniques
- Work to Health and Safety guidelines and sign the workshop agreement
- Identify and use a variety of hand building techniques of pinching, slabbing, coiling, pressmoulding.
- Use the wheel to throw a clay form (subject to availability)
- Turn thrown forms (subject to availability)
- Decoration techniques
Please note, clay is paid for by the wet weight in class. All items are charged prior to and firing. Only clay supplied by Kent Adult Education is allowed in our potteries.

Who is the tutor?
About the Tutor: Eleanor Machin
How will I be taught?
Your tutor will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will look at the work of contemporary and historical artists and/or craftspeople and you will keep a sketchbook/notebook and individual learning plan to record your goals, ideas, processes and progress. Students will need to understand the potential benefit from the programme of study, read and interpret ideas, communicate responses that are clear, logical and understandable and manage your own time. You will undertake critical evaluation and be motivated to develop creative skills and enhance/develop personal skills.
The tutor will provide feedback on your work through one to one guidance and group critiques. You will be able to self-assess against your individualised learning outcomes stated on your ILP.
These outcomes will be the basis of all learning. Additional Personal Learning Outcomes can be negotiated with your tutor to better meet your individual needs.
What do I need to bring with me?
Please bring an apron or overall to the lessons as clay tends to be a messy subject. If you have any pottery tools bring them to the first session but do not buy any equipment until you have spoken with the tutor. A notebook, pen and pencil will be useful for taking notes related to your object making. Clay is paid for by weight at a reasonable rate in class, items must be paid for before they are fired.
For Health and Safety please wear closed toe footware.
