This course is an opportunity to learn the basic skills and techniques of making thrown pots and objects. You will cover the basic making processes, including clay preparation, shape forming including vases, bowls, mugs, and turning a foot ring. You will also find out about slip and glaze decoration.
How will I be taught?
Craft courses provide an opportunity for you to learn and develop skills, techniques and understand how to design for a chosen craft. Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including: demonstration, instructions, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will be encouraged to look at the work of other craftspeople and artists, both contemporary and historical.
Your tutor will give you feedback during the sessions and during one to one tuition.
Our courses are taught by qualified and experienced tutors most of whom are practising craftspeople.
What do I need to bring with me?
Please bring an apron or overall to the lessons as clay tends to be a messy subject. If you have any pottery tools bring them to the first session but do not buy any equipment until you have spoken with the tutor. A notebook, pen and pencil will be useful for taking notes related to your object making. Clay, glazes and firing are costed by weight and the size of the item you create.
What can I do next?
Further Pottery and Craft courses with KAE.
What do I need to join the course
Everyone is welcome to join the course who has an interest in learning how to use the wheel to make ceramic objects.
It is important to note that craft courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity.
