This course will cover a range of sculpture and ceramic techniques.
Projects will include working on individual projects and exploring different building techniques in clay.
You will be encouraged to look at the work of artists and sculptors to assist in your projects.
By the end of the course you will be able to:
- produce a personal piece of work inspired from a collection of resources
- model a ceramic form from direct observation
- complete a clay form through to its final firing
- identify and use tools and materials
- be aware of and work to relevant Health and Safety guidelines

How will I be taught?
Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will look at the work of contemporary and historical artists and you will keep a sketchbook/notebook and individual learning plan (ILP) to record goals, ideas, processes and progress.Students will need to understand the potential benefit from the programme of study, read and interpret ideas, communicate responses that are clear, logical and understandable and manage your own time. You will undertake critical reflection and evaluation and be motivated to develop creative skills and enhance/develop personal skills.
One to one tutorial guidance, group critiques, self-assessment against learning outcomes stated on the Individual Learning Plan.
What do I need to bring with me?
Students have to cover the cost of their own materials and are generally able to purchase these through the centre. The cost will vary according to the scale of the work produced, but the tutor will advise on the approximate costs of each project. Please bring any materials and equipment you have that might be appropriate to the course. All students should bring a sketchbook of at least A4 size, preferably with a hard cover, ring bound and containing good quality cartridge paper and a selection of pencils to the first class.
What can I do next?
Courses are designed to progress students to higher levels of the craft and also to support application to Access to Art and Degree Foundation courses or relevant Craft, Art and Design Degree courses.
What do I need to join the course
Everyone is welcome. No knowledge or previous experience required.
Beginners and those with experience.It is important to note that craft courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity.
