Self Defence - Beginners - Centre Based

This Self Defence course will be delivered face-to-face from The Gateway in Ashford. The course has been designed by and is delivered in partnership with Barry Phelan of Wugong Academy. Students on this Practical Self Defence course will develop an awareness of their surroundings from a personal safety perspective and be able to identify and deal with potentially dangerous personal situations such as a physical confrontation or being restrained. Being attacked with objects will also be covered along with all aspects of being safe. Students will be able to explore real life situations based on personal experience which the tutor will offer advice on.

By the end of this course, you should be able to:-

- Understand the law and how it affects self defence
- Effectively use your surroundings to make you safe
- Perform basic release techniques
- Perform basic strikes
- Have a greater knowledge of how to deal with domestic violence
- Identify ways to get help and alert people
- Have greater knowledge of how to stay safe in night clubs and pubs

How will I be taught?

You will be taught by a qualified instructor. Teaching methods will include demonstration, explanation, discussion and times for question and answer sessions. Your tutor will demonstrate movements and talk you through all exercises. You will be required to complete a pre course health and fitness questionnaire and during the lessons you will be carefully observed to ensure that you are working safely. You will also be encouraged to monitor and record your progression through the course and your tutor will also give you feedback on your progress. At the end of the course you and your tutor will assess the progress you have made.

What do I need to bring with me?

Comfortable and non restrictive clothing would be beneficial, however, clothing that would be normally worn provides a better understanding of using the techniques in a real life situation.
