This course will be held at Sevenoaks Adult Education Centre.
You will learn how to use a sewing machine and make seams, hems, buttons and zips as well as other dressmaking techniques whilst working on a project of your own choice. You will develop your skills through working on your individual projects - we will be adhering to social distancing guidelines in the classroom.
By the end of this course you should be able to:
- Know how to thread up and use the sewing machine.
- Demonstrate a range of hand and machine sewing skills
- Produce a range of sewing samples for future reference of seams, hems, zips, machine applique
- Press and finish all the samples you have made.
- Work on a personal project based on prior experience
Some homework [optional] may be needed to complete the project by the end of this course
Who is the tutor?
About the Tutor: Tracy James
Tracy James is a fully qualified costumier and has worked in the West End on Lion King, Starlight Express and Beauty and the Beast, as well as the Royal Opera House for the Royal Ballet. Her work has taken her to Paris and Monte Carlo, working at their opera houses. She also has worked for Fortnum and Masons, Liberty and Selfridges on their specialised christmas windows. She is continually working on youth productions in the local area, as well as abroad in Dubai, whilst also making curtains, wedding dresses and alterations throughout the year.
How will I be taught?
This course will be taught using a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, instruction, one to one guidance, and group discussions.
Your tutor will encourage and advise on a 1-1 basis where necessary, however be aware that students will be working on different individual projects.
What do I need to bring with me?
A well equipped sewing kit to include large and small scissors, hand and machine needles, seam ripper, tape measure, pins, threads. Paper scissors, ruler, notebook, pencil and rubber. As the course continues you will need to buy paper patterns, fabric and haberdashery- The tutor will give advice on these at the first session.

This course is for beginners or those with little experience, all are welcome and everyone will be encouraged to achieve their full potential working on a project suitable for their previous experience.
