This course will allow you to become familiar with using a sewing machine be introduced to commonly used techniques for sewing, reading a pattern and altering clothes. You will develop and add to your range of sewing skills, knowledge and confidence.This course will cover the following topics:- Develop your skills in using your sewing machine - Undertake basic checks to remedy problems with the machine- Use basic garment making techniques and their use- Understanding a wider variety of fabric types- Reading and using a shop bought pattern- Laying out and cutting pattern pieces

Who is the tutor?

About the Tutor: Sian Lewis

Siân Lewis is a designer and textile artist. She studied fashion at the Royal College of Art and Ravensbourne College of Art and Design and has10 years experience of designing and making competition dancewear including for Strictly Come Dancing. She has worked on costumes for TV, stage and film and has been teaching textiles and art since 2008. Sian is currently developing her own range of textile prints and accessories.

How will I be taught?

Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques.

What do I need to have with me?

You will need a sewing machine, with its accessories and instruction book. A notepad and pen and your own sewing kit including sharp scissors for cutting fabric, pins, needles, a tape measure, chalk fabric pencil, sewing threads to match fabrics; a tape measure. A digital camera is also useful. You will need to provide your own pattern, fabric and thread to make a simple garment. The tutor will bring other items you need for the first session and give advice about what to buy if you are not sure.

What do I need to join the course

This course will be delivered online.
You can access the class from your computer equipped with a camera and a microphone, from a laptop (where the camera and microphone should be built-in), a tablet or a smartphone.

Before each lesson, the tutor may send you by email essential lesson information/handouts for you to consult in advance, and before the class starts, the tutor will have sent you by email an invitation to join, which will be a simple weblink to click. The system is free, secure and easy to use. Should you have questions about the required equipment, please do not hesitate to contact us by telephone or by email. This course is suitable for those who have completed the Absolute Beginners course or who have a little knowledge of sewing techniques and their sewing machine, but who need to develop their skills, knowledge and confidence in sewing and using a sewing machine. There are sewing machines for you to use at the Centre, but it is best that you bring your own machine, if you have one, so you get used to using it.

It is important to note that craft courses are practical, requiring a degree of manual dexterity.
