This course will be held at Tonbridge Adult Education Centre.
This course is for those with an interest in using their sewing machine to make either simple garments or small items for the home. The projects will be varied to suit prior skills and experience along with students interests. You will find out how to use your sewing machine and work with different fabrics . If you choose to begin making a garment you will find out how to work with and use a commercial dress pattern. You will develop your skills through working on your individual projects - we will be adhering to social distancing guidelines in the classroom.
Who is the tutor?
About the Tutor: Tracy James
Tracy James is a fully qualified costumier and has worked in the West End on Lion King, Starlight Express and Beauty and the Beast, as well as the Royal Opera House for the Royal Ballet. Her work has taken her to Paris and Monte Carlo, working at their opera houses. She also has worked for Fortnum and Masons, Liberty and Selfridges on their specialised christmas windows. She is continually working on youth productions in the local area, as well as abroad in Dubai, whilst also making curtains, wedding dresses and alterations throughout the year.
How will I be taught?
Each workshop will commence with clear learning outcomes and more often or not, a tutor demonstration, taking you step by step through the process.
One to one guidance is an essential part of learning and development, along with group discussions and informal critiques.
Your tutor will encourage and advise on a 1-1 basis where necessary,
You will complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) in the second session, this will establish your starting point and will aid your development throughout the course whilst learning new or improving on current skills.
What do I need to bring with me?
A well equipped sewing kit to include large and small scissors, hand and machine needles, seam ripper, tape measure, pins, threads, paper scissors, ruler, notebook, pencil and rubber.
As the course continues you will need to buy paper patterns, fabric and haberdashery.
More experienced students may bring a pattern and fabric to the first session, beginners will be given advice and guidance on a good starting project.
Please note that with all our craft courses, specialist equipment can be costly. Please do not buy anything until you are sure the course is running.

What do I need to join the course
Everyone is welcome to join this course , no experience is needed just an enthusiasm to enjoy sewing and working with fabric.
This course is for beginners or those with some sewing experience who would like to make some original simple home furnishing or clothing items . The skills taught can be applied to a variety of future projects .
It is important to note that craft courses are practical, requiring a degree of manual dexterity.
