This course will raise awareness of this issue and give strategies to help spot and support emotionally and psychologically vulnerable people who may feel suicidal. We look at beliefs surrounding suicide and consider how we can all, as a society, contribute to increasing awareness and recognising the signs that may indicate someone is having suicidal thoughts. We will discuss how to listen when someone is verbalising that they are contemplating suicide and we will also discuss supporting safety,.by potentially spotting the signs early on that someone maybe feeling suicidal. This course will be interactive and will increase your confidence through better understanding of what can leave people feeling suicidal and your part in the relationship.

By the end of the course you will be able to:
Describe the signs that can indicate someone is having suicidal thoughts.
To recognise how to listen to someone who is talking about suicide.
To identify our own attitudes around suicide.

This course is educational rather than therapeutic. General broad ideas will be shared and discussed amongst the group. There could be some sharing of personal experiences. This course is not a replacement for personal therapy and this element will be carefully managed by the tutor.

How will I be taught?

The course will consist of a mixture of tutor input, group activities and discussion. The emphasis will be on participation and sharing of ideas.
