This Teaching Assistant course is suitable for anyone who is interested in gaining a qualification to give them skills to support teaching and learning in schools.
The course will consist of the following mandatory units: Child and young person development; Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people; Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults; Equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people; Help improve own and team practice in schools; Maintain and support relationships with children and young people; Support children and young people’s health and safety; Support children and young people’s positive behaviour; Support learning activities and Schools as organisations. There will be one optional unit which will be discussed with you at the beginning of the course.
By the end of the course students should be able to:
Provide support in the classroom, working under the guidance of the class teacher.
Identify legislation and a range of school policies and explain how they are put into practice.
Identify and describe a range of different types of schools and school staffing structures.
Evaluate their own professional development, with support, setting goals and targets for improvement.
Explain holistic child development and identify factors that may impact on development.
Students should expect to spend 3-5 hours a week working on course assignments in addition to the course hours delivered via Zoom to begin with and then in the classroom when safe to do so, plus the hours in your school placement throughout the course. You are required to attend a minimum 90% of the course.
At this time to keep our learners and our staff safe, all of our new courses will start online. As more information becomes available, we will review the feasibility of return to our buildings from November onwards and act accordingly.
How will I be taught?
This Teaching Assistant course will include tutor input plus small group work, tutorials and practical workshops. You will receive guidance in producing an online E-portfolio of evidence that will be submitted for assessment.
Tutors will give feedback on homework assignments as well as classroom activities; tutorials will also be included. The assessment of this course includes two observations of your working practice within the school following which feedback will be given.
What to look for in a school placement:
Students will need access to policies and will require information on safeguarding and evacuation procedures. These are mainly found on the school websites.
In class, students will initially be expected to support individuals or small groups in class with all subjects under the teacher’s supervision. As students’ progress on the course they will be able to support small groups independently or carry out interventions.
Where possible it would be beneficial for students to see the lesson plan in advance to enable them to prepare or research if necessary.
Following activities, students may be encouraged to complete brief observations on the children they have worked with and given the opportunity to share their thoughts with the teacher or class TA.
To gain the most from the placement, students are required to evaluate their performance and consider how to improve their practice. Input from an experienced staff member offering constructive advice for future practice.
What do I need to bring with me?
Access to a computer / laptop / iPad with internet connection to attend classes via Zoom where needed and be able to upload work into the E - portfolio. Accreditation costs are included in the course fee as well as a student portal for the online E- portfolio.

What do I need to join the course
A paid or voluntary school placement is essential for a minimum of one day a week in a primary, secondary or special educational setting. Due to the current pandemic the school placement, which is organised by the student, needs to be in place by February 2022. Students also need to have an enhanced DBS check (previously CRB). Students should initially contact their placement school to discuss local DBS arrangements. Please note that this may incur an additional cost that is not included in the advertised course fee.
This is a Level 2 qualification equating to GCSE (grade A-C) and, therefore, assignments will require this level of competence in English. You should be able to follow spoken and written instructions, read handouts/exercises and take part in group discussions.

We work hard to recruit sufficient numbers to ensure a course is viable to run. However occasionally we may have to close a course that is not viable.
