WFL - Mini Builders and Boffins

This online course is for mothers, fathers and carers with children with children aged 4-7 years (older siblings welcome). Adults can only attend with a child, (and children can only attend with an adult). Adults will need to participate fully in the activity and supervise their children throughout.

Family Learning courses are engagement courses, helping families move back into learning. All the courses are FREE. Learners can attend up to two Wider Family Learning (WFL) and Parenting courses from August 1st 2020, and can then progress onto a Family English, Maths and Language course. Priority for places is given to new learners.

This course is designed to:
Support interaction, provide quality time for families to have fun and learn together, strengthen relationships, build confidence and extend child development through interactive opportunity. The families will extend their knowledge of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) through fun and creative activities. Families will have the opportunity to gain confidence in planning and creating a variety of homemade toys, and/or experimenting with water, and/or conducting investigations in sound.
Content will include all/some of the following:
Each week will explore a different theme:

• Make some toys (such as a homemade marble run)
• Have fun with water (explore the science of liquids through a range of fun, wet activities)
Explore the concept of sound (you can even make your own instrument)

How will I be taught?

This is an online course delivered using Zoom, in real time with live interaction with your tutor and fellow learners. Learners will join the class from home and be able to exchange and interact with other learners as they would in the classroom (speaking and listening).
There will be discussion and demonstration. You will have opportunities to discuss and ask questions - this is an interactive course with the Tutor present throughout

What do I need to have with me?

Laptop, tablet or Smart phone with the Zoom app installed. There is no subscription required.
A list of required items will be emailed to learners a week before the course starts
The full list for all activities include the following (but substitutes can be made):

Junk Modelling (such as Kitchen towel rolls etc), pens, paper, scissors, Sellotape, marbles, lolly pop sticks, elastic bands, cotton wool, rulers, coat hangers, wool, paper cups, straws, glue, access to running water, washing up bowl, sink or float items, tinfoil, coins, washing up liquid, cardboard, felt tip pens, carbonated water (or other clear fizzy drink), glass/plastic cup, raisins, water bottle, Alka-Seltzer, food colouring, oil, baking tray, rice or sugar, cling-film, bowl, wooden spoon, wool/yarn, kitchen towel roll, plastic bottle, glitter, dried beans/paper clips, baking paper, paper plates

FEML (Family English, Maths and Language) courses.
Courses run at Kent Adult Education centres, and other educational establishments.

Before the class starts, the tutor will have sent you by email an invitation to join, which will be a simple weblink to click. The system is free, secure and easy to use. Should you have questions about the required equipment, please do not hesitate to contact us by telephone or by email.
