About this course

This Tai Chi course in Tunbridge Wells is a combination of relaxation and toning exercises, promoting harmony and health, balancing the mind, body and spirit. The movements are slow and deliberate and together can help to improve mental and physical well-being. At the end of the course students will be familiar with at least part of the Tai Chi Hand Form and have practised movements to help improve their balance, strength, mobility and co-ordination. Your tutor will explain the benefits of Tai Chi and how you can apply them to your daily life.

You will need to be able to follow verbal instructions, observe and copy physical movements and use spatial awareness within a group. Although there is no specific work set outside of the class, students will gain most benefit if Tai Chi is performed regularly and practised between classes

By the end of this course you should be able to:
• Explain the philosophy, history and terminology of Tai Chi
• Demonstrate the form using correct alignment
• Identify the benefits of regular Tai Chi practice
• Demonstrate and explain Tai Chi relaxation methods.

How will I be taught?

You will be taught by a qualified and experienced Tai Chi tutor. Your tutor will demonstrate movements and talk you through all sequences. You will be carefully observed to ensure that you are working safely and be encouraged to monitor and record your progression on the course.
To assist us in providing a safe and healthy environment for you to exercise you will be asked to complete a Confidential Health Questionnaire. Your progress will be monitored through a Learning record and your own personal learning diary or fitness log.

What do I need to bring with me?

You will need supportive, comfortable clothing that allows ease of movement. Denim jeans, formal trousers, skirts or dress are not suitable for this activity. You should wear shoes with a soft sole. Sandals, boots or any footwear with a high heel are not recommended. You may be advised not to take part if you are not dressed appropriately.

Students may wish to bring a towel. Please bring water and avoid eating one and a half hours prior to exercising.

About the Tutor: Bronwen Elaine Ferry

Bronwen has been practicing Tai Chi since about 1998, initially because she was interested in alternative methods of exercise and the culture and traditions which accompanied Tai Chi. She travelled through Asia, visiting Vietnam, Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia, and some of her exercises and principles are drawn from these experiences. She has had hip and pelvis problems for many years and found that these were considerably reduced as she increased her practice of Tai Chi.
