About this course

Yin Yoga is a predominantly floor based practice which usually consists of a series of long-held, passive poses.
Although the whole body is worked the focus is on the lower part of the body (the hips, pelvis, inner things and lower spine). The poses are held for up to four minutes (sometimes longer) in order to reach the deep connective tissues to find release.
We use a range of equipment and props to support the body in these poses and the challenge is often quietening the mind. As such it’s a beautiful meditative practice. Every class will also include a breathing technique or meditation as well as relaxation, which all work to deepen the sense of wellbeing

Your class will be held in our modern studio where class sizes are no larger than 8-9 students, giving you the benefit of practising as part of a small group. As with all Yoga classes we advise anyone with a pre-existing medical condition to seek advice from their GP before exercising.

By the end of this course you should be able to:
• Demonstrate and hold a variety of postures using correct alignment
• Practise control of breath to assist relaxation and stamina
• Identify the benefits of Yoga practice throughout various life stages
• Link a number of postures to perform a flowing sequence
• Recount at least three ways in which exercises can benefit health and wellbeing throughout various life stages.

To assist us in providing a safe and healthy environment for you to exercise you will be asked to complete a Confidential Health Questionnaire. If you have suffered from any of the conditions listed, please check with a medical practitioner to find out whether this course is suitable for you.
- Do you ever have chest pain?
- Have you had any operations or injuries in the last year?
- Do you often feel faint or dizzy?
- Are you on long term medication?
- Do you have high or low blood pressure?
- Do you have a bone or joint problem, such as Arthritis, Osteoporosis, back or knee problems?

How will I be taught?

You will be taught by a qualified yoga instructor. Our teaching methods include demonstration, explanation, discussion and times for question and answer sessions. Your tutor will demonstrate movements and talk you through all exercises. You will be carefully observed to ensure that you are working safely. At the start of your course you will be asked to complete an Individual Learning Plan which includes your Initial Assessment of your own fitness levels and will be used by you and your tutors to reflect on and monitor your progress. Your tutor will also use this information to ensure that all of your personal goals are achieved and provide individual support where necessary. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
Your tutor will discuss your progress with you and give you feedback. You will be encouraged to record your progress on an Individual Learning Plan.

What do I need to bring with me?

Please read the following information carefully. You may be advised not to take part if you are not dressed appropriately. You will need supportive, comfortable clothing that allows ease of movement. Denim jeans, formal trousers, skirts or dresses are not suitable for this activity. Yoga is generally practiced in bare feet or socks and all movements are performed on a mat. Students need to bring a mat to work on and may wish to bring a towel.

Please bring water and avoid eating one and a half hours prior to exercising.

About the Tutor: Samantha Stone

Trained with the British Wheel of Yoga, Samantha Stone teaches Hatha Yoga with elements of Iyengar and Vinyasa styles. The classes are aimed at all levels and incorporate a range of postures including backbends, twists, balances and dynamic sequences to improve flexibility and fitness.

Breathing techniques are also incorporated into classes to improve lung capacity and aid in stress relief. Sam likes to finish every class with a guided relaxation and her teaching style is relaxed and down to earth. With informal but challenging classes, Sam encourages students to become more in tune with their bodies through exploring a variety of postures. Sam believes awareness and improving one’s own posture can have an impact on individual health and wellbeing so likes to feature such work in her classes.

“I often hear people tell me that they can’t do Yoga because they are not flexible enough but I want people to realise Yoga isn’t a competitive sport. It’s all about getting in tune with your body, working through a series of postures and movements which will, over time, increase your flexibility and strength. It’s not all about the body either, we work on the mind to de-stress with breathing techniques and relaxation”
