About this course

This course is for complete beginners and for students with some experience who have not yet learned the Italic hand.
Using broad-edged dip pens, learn the beautiful Italic hand from scratch. Italic is a versatile script that works well for formal and informal occasions. It is also the one to master if you later wish to learn flourishing, which adds decorative extras, producing livelier writing. You will start with pen patterns, which are a fun and creative way to get to know the broad-edged calligraphy pen. These provide useful border decoration whilst gently introducing you to some of the pen strokes that help to make the letterforms. This will lead seamlessly into letter shapes, studied in shape groups. Next we focus on assembling the letters into words, using good letter and word spacing and developing a good writing rhythm. You will also be introduced to the corresponding capitals, so that you can put your writing to practical use by writing: names, short phrases, greeting cards and the like.
Homework: some practice between sessions is necessary in order to make continuous progress.

By the end of the course you should be able to:

- Set up your workspace efficiently
- Use a dip pen correctly
- Write the Italic minuscule alphabet
- Produce even letter and word spacing in your writing
- Arrange names/messages/text on a page with due attention to layout and margins
- Put capitals with small letters
- Use the building, tools and materials safely and responsibly

How will I be taught?

Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will look at the work of contemporary and historical scribes and calligraphers and you will keep a portfolio, workbook and individual learning plan (ILP) to record goals, ideas, processes and progress. Students will need to understand the potential benefit from the programme of study, read and interpret ideas, communicate responses that are clear, logical and understandable and manage your own time. You will undertake critical evaluation and be motivated to develop creative skills and enhance personal skills.
You will receive one to one feedback throughout your course.
