About this course

The time is the 1st century BC, the place: Rome. The Roman Republic has been around for hundreds of years and has started to conquer the Mediterranean world but is confronted at home by civil unrest, slave revolts and the personal ambitions of people like Pompey the Great and Julius Caesar. Fortunes swing between populists and aristocrats, demagogues and dictators. We will follow and analyse this exciting and action packed period which only comes to end when one man takes control under the guise of ‘restoring the Republic’. How will I be taught?

A mixture of tutor input and discussion. The tutor will use as much contemporary material as possible, combined with modern analysis and literary and archaeological evidence, to tell the story and understand the motives and lives
of the people at all level of society.
While there is no formal assessment your learning will be evaluated in informal ways such as questioning and discussion.

What do I need to bring with me?

Writing materials for note taking. Handouts will be provided. If the visit option is chosen arrangements will be discussed and agreed by students.

About the Tutor: Richard Marsden

Richard has taught for Kent Adult Education for a number of years. He has an MA (Cantab) and a BA (Hons) in Modern and Medieval Languages. His mother is French and he has family connections in France and he also knows Latin. He is a keen amateur local historian with a particular interest in the traditional buildings of Kent.
