About this course

This 'History - Chaucer and his Pilgrims' course in Tunbridge Wells will allow you to explore life in 14th century England and to discover more about one of our most celebrated writers. Using the 'Canterbury Tales' as our evidence, we will consider the lives, work and experiences of the types of people portrayed in Chaucer’s work and discuss the significance of religion and the practice of pilgrimage in Mediaeval England. We will also investigate Chaucer’s own colourful life – his position at court, literary fame and diplomatic work – as well as the close, familial relationship he shared with the Regent, John of Gaunt and the future Henry IV.

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

• Place Chaucer in English history and describe the various roles he played during his life
• Discuss the experiences of English men and women during the period and debate the significance of the church upon their everyday lives
• Assess the value of literary sources as historical evidence
