About this course

Many people think the only way to practice yoga is on a mat but it doesn’t matter how or where you do yoga. Yoga is about gently stretching and strengthening the body, improving breath function and awareness and, most importantly, bringing the mind to stillness and peace – all of which can be done working from a chair. Seated yoga is a very adaptable form of yoga, growing in popularity because it is a quick and effective way to bring a sense of balance to body and mind, whatever your level of flexibility.

Techniques of stretching and strengthening, breath control, relaxation and meditation will be covered. Students will learn how to increase awareness of their body and mind through the physical exercises and the mind-body connection, which is the hallmark of yoga.

By the end of the course, students should be able to:
perform a sequence
perform breathing practice
perform a relaxation or meditation technique to relieve tension and calm the mind.

How will I be taught?

You will be taught by tutor demonstration and encouraged to work at your own pace. There will be some opportunity for mat work for those who can get down and up from the floor without assistance. Handouts will be provided for home practice. There is no certification for this course.
To assist us in providing a safe and healthy environment for you to exercise you will be asked to complete a Confidential Health Questionnaire. Your progress will be monitored through a Learning record and your own personal learning diary or fitness log.

What do I need to bring with me?

Equipment is provided but you may like to bring your own blanket for relaxation. You will need supportive, comfortable clothing that allows ease of movement. Denim jeans, formal trousers, skirts or dress are not suitable for this activity. You should wear shoes with a soft sole. Sandals, boots or any footwear with a high heel are not recommended. You may be advised not to take part if you are not dressed appropriately.

Please avoid eating one and a half hours prior to exercising.

What do I need to join the course

Before joining this course you will be invited to discuss your needs with the Programme Manager to make sure this is the best course for you.
This course is primarily chair based yoga and is suitable for older people, those with limited mobility, chronic illness or who are recovering from illness and anyone who wants to explore ways to stretch and relieve tension in chair based occupations. Some standing work, using the chair as support if needed, will also be available.

We may advise some students that this course is not suitable depending on your illness/disability.
If you have a disability and think it may affect your learning in the classroom, or using any of our other services, please speak to us in confidence as soon as possible. We will discuss options with you and do our best to provide the support you would like.
