About this course

The expressive use of colour in painting has become a familiar feature of modern and contemporary art, but when did it begin? The Fauvist movement of the early Twentieth Century - typified by artists such as Henri Matisse, Raoul Dufy and Maurice de Vlaminck - is best known for works that emphasized painterly qualities and strong colour, over the representational or realistic values retained by Impressionism. This course will focus on the paintings of Matisse, Dufy and Vlaminck, and you will make studies and a small painting using their styles as a point of reference.

By the end of this course you should be able to:
Recognise the styles and techniques of three major artists.
Select and use a range of materials and methods.
Produce painted studies that explore colour and light.
Work to health and safety guidelines.

How will I be taught?

Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will look at the work of contemporary and historical artists and can use a sketchbook/notebook to record goals, ideas, processes and progress. Students will need to understand the potential benefit from the programme of study, read and interpret ideas, communicate responses that are clear, logical and understandable and manage your own time. You will undertake critical reflection and evaluation and be motivated to develop creative skills and enhance/develop personal skills.

What do I need to bring with me?

Materials are provided, however, if you have any painting and drawing materials/equipment that might be appropriate please bring them with you.
