About this course

On this one day course you will be able to apply special raku glazes and fire previously bisque fired work using the exciting and immediate process of raku, creating unpredictable and dramatic effects. The firing takes place out of doors, so is weather dependent.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Understand and participate in the process of a raku firing;

Glaze and fire a previously created piece of pottery;

Be familiar with the work of at least one potter working in raku;

Be aware of and work to health and safety guidelines.

How will I be taught?

Your tutor will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will look at the work of contemporary and historical craftspeople and you will keep a sketchbook and anindividual learning plan to record your goals, ideas, and processes. You will undertake critical evaluation and be motivated to develop creative skills and enhance/develop personal skills. The tutor will provide feedback on your work through one to one guidance and group critiques. You will be able to self-assess against your individualised learning outcomes stated on the ILP.

What do I need to bring with me?

Please wear old clothes and shoes that protect your feet (no sandals). You will need to have made pots to fire earlier, avoiding fragile bodies or construction methods. All pots are paid for by fired weight at a reasonable rate. Health and safety issues are highly important on this type of course and you will receive a thorough induction to safe working practices.

What can I do next?

Higher level pottery and ceramic courses.

About the Tutor: Claire Griffiths

Claire Griffiths graduated in 1986 from Ravensbourne College of Art and Design, where she gained a BA Hons in Ceramics. She continued to make one off sculptural ceramics, selling my work in exhibitions and galleries in London including Blackheath Gallery and selling work from a stall in Greenwich Market. She was involved with The Lewisham Art House studios and taught pottery for a variety of groups with Greenwich Community College for ten years before moving to Whitstable. Whilst working at Mid Kent College, she became interested in Fine Art through teaching A Level Art and Design. This inspired her to return to study and gain an MA in Fine Art.
