About this course

Suitable for compete novices, or those who would like a refresher in the basics of patchwork and quilting techniques, this course will enable you to learn or practice the skills to make colourful quilts, throws and wall-hangings as well as unique accessories such as bags and purses. A basic sewing machine is useful but not essential (tutor will advise) as both hand sewing and machine sewing will be covered during the course. You can make a cushion or small bag initially before moving on to more challenging projects. Alternatively, if you have a work in progress or a project in mind, feel free to bring this with you.

By the end of the course you will be able to:
• Use a rotary cutter safely and successfully to cut accurate pattern pieces
• Make samples of several different styles of patchwork blocks
• Design your own blocks
• Understand and demonstrate the construction elements of a quilt
• Be aware of and work to relevant Health and Safety guidelines

How will I be taught?

Craft courses provide an opportunity for you to learn and develop skills, techniques and understand how to design for a chosen craft to a higher level. Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstration, instructions, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques.

Our courses are taught by qualified and experienced tutors most of whom are practising craftspeople.

What do I need to bring with me?

Your tutor will advise you about project materials, but you will need:

• Choice of suitable fabrics – small pieces or scraps of dress-weight fabrics or patchwork fat quarters are ideal.
• Wadding suitable for project(s)
• Contrasting or co-ordinating sewing thread
• Basic sewing kit, including fabric scissors
• Rotary cutter and mat
• Notepad, pencil, ruler
• Optional extras - squared or isometric paper and coloured pencils
