About this course

This course will enable you to better understand your machine; why threading correctly is so important, understanding both top and bottom tensions, how each of the stitches works, zips, buttonholes, sewing with stretch fabrics, sizes and types of needles to use with each type of fabric, etc. The course will give you the confidence to use your machine more fully. The size of the group will be small to enable lots of individual guidance.

By the end of this course you should be able to:
- thread your machine correctly
- select and use different stitches and functions
- select the correct needle for the fabric
- be more confident to use your machine
- use your machine safely

How will I be taught?

Craft courses provide an opportunity for students to learn and develop skills, techniques and understand how to design for a chosen craft. Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstration, instructions, one-to-one tutorial guidance and group tuition. Students will need to participate fully to get the most out of the course. Our courses are taught by qualified and experienced tutors most of whom are practising craftspeople.

What do I need to bring with me?

Please bring your sewing machine, all attachments, feet and power leads, and a basic sewing kit (thread, scissors, pins, etc.). If there is any fabric you have difficulties sewing with or that you're not sure about, please feel free to bring it along. All other materials will be provided.

What can I do next?

You will be able to take further sewing courses or take on a specific project class.

What do I need to join the course

For those who wish to gain understanding of their sewing machine. It is important to note that craft courses are practical, requiring a degree of manual dexterity. If you need to bring a carer with you, or be accompanied by another person, please ask to speak to the Programme Manager before you enrol.
