About this course

This 80-hour intensive course in Sittingbourne is delivered in partnership with Hi Kent (www.hikent.org) and leads to the Signature Level 2 Certificate in British Sign Language. Students MUST have already passed the Level 1 Award in BSL and preferably have attended a Preparing for Level 2 course or be working using BSL.

At the end of the course students should be able to:

• Communicate in BSL about day-to-day topics including greetings, shopping, describing home and work place, talking about the weather, transport and directions; ask and understand questions in order to sustain an everyday conversation.

• Carry out day to day activities; shopping for food and other; travelling; eating out. Describe people, animals and objects as well as places in greater detail using BSL order and a range of facial expressions and body language.

• Provide personal, social and work information. Compare and express preferences; state likes and dislikes.

• Communicate about home, school, college or work including directions, refreshments, using numbers in relation to time and calendar, using BSL order and a range of facial expressions and body language.

A further 60 hours of practice during the course, preferably with native BSL users, is also required. The tutor will be able to advise on how to achieve this.

The full qualification comprises three units, two of which will be videoed, assessed by the tutor and then sent to Signature for final marking. There will be assigned dates for the assessments during the course hours. These dates, which cannot be altered, will be advised by your tutor.

How will I be taught?

The emphasis is on signed communication and Sign Language is used most of the time. There will be an expectation to have voices off during the lesson. A variety of teaching strategies will be used, eg. demonstration and explanation by the tutor who signs, repeated by the students, small group work and pair work, whole class exercises, videos and games and handouts to take home. Homework set will provide an opportunity for self study which is essential to pass the assessments and will include the use of on-line resources. Students will be videoed for mock exam purposes and two of the three units are videoed to meet exam requirements.
Initial assessment will be carried out at the beginning of the course to assess individual skill level. Each student's starting point will be recorded on an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and targets will be set. This will be revisited from time to time during the course to monitor and record progress. Tutors will mark homework and give written or verbal feedback.

What do I need to bring with me?

A folder for your notes, notebook/paper and pen/pencil. The assessment fees are included in the course fee. There are no set text books for this course but students may wish to buy books and CD/DVDs for home study. The tutor will advise. We advise students not to buy anything until after the first session.

What can I do next?

Students can progress to Level 3 with another provider. The tutor will advise.
