About this course

This is a practical Art course in which you will be expected to develop an individual approach to the subject of painting with an emphasis on abstraction. There will be opportunities to see and discuss work by modern and contemporary artists and to consider the ideas behind and influences on their work. You will be encouraged to incorporate new ideas and approaches into your own work.
By the end of the course you should be able to:
Produce a body of work based on the projects set during the course
Draw and paint subjects derived from a variety of sources including landscape, memory and natural forms.
Develop work that relates either to design, colour, pattern, tonal attitude etc of well-known artists work. Then to incorporate one or two of these aspects into your own work whilst maintaining your own personal style and voice.
Improve your knowledge of abstract art and of art in general and demonstrate this through your projects
Be aware of and work to relevant Health and Safety guidelines

How will I be taught?

You will, through discussion and negotiation with the tutor, develop an idea of your personal learning outcomes and will work towards these. The tutor will use a variety of teaching methods including instruction, demonstration, practice, experimentation and discovery, video and slide shows, one-to-one and group discussion and group critique. You will be expected to complete an Individualised Learning Plan to record your progress.

What do I need to bring with me?

You will need to provide your own materials and these will vary in cost according to your preferred medium.
From the outset we will be working in colour, so please bring a range of pencils, some coloured medium eg paint, pastels or any other materials that you already have that might be appropriate to the first lesson. You will also need an A4 sketchbook, preferably with a hard cover and ring bound containing good quality cartridge paper. If you are a complete beginner and have no materials at all, please wait for your tutor’s advice about what to buy on the first day of the course.

What do I need to join the course

The course will usually be a mix of confident beginners and intermediate to advanced students who have basic skills in drawing and painting. You should have sufficient skills to work on projects related to ideas you wish to pursue or those set by the tutor and you will need to be able to work under your own direction at times.

It is important to note that Art courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity. If you need to bring a carer with you or be accompanied by another adult please ask to speak to a Curriculum Leader before you enrol.
