How will I be taught?
The emphasis is on signed communication and Sign Language will be used most of the time. A variety of teaching strategies will be used - demonstration and explanation by the tutor with signs, repeated by students, small group work and pair work, whole class exercises, videos and games and handouts to take home.
Initial assessment is carried out at the beginning of the course to assess individual skill level. Each student's starting point is recorded on an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and targets are set to aid development of the skill. These are revisited from time to time during the course to monitor and record progress.
What do I need to bring with me?
A file/folder and pen/pencil for your notes. There are no set textbooks for this course but students may wish to buy books and CD/DVDs for home study. The tutor will advise.
What can I do next?
Students should be ready to progress to a Signature Level 2 Certificate in British Sign Language course which is an intensive 80 hour course of study. See our website www.kentadulteducation.co.uk or speak to your tutor for advice.
What do I need to join the course
Students should have completed Level 1 Award in British Sign Language or have attended an Introductory course for proven skills to that level.
Anyone who has studied British Sign Language for at least one year and wishes to gain more confidence and fluency in signing and learn more advanced features of the language. Also for those preparing to attend the Level 2 BSL course in the future.
