About this course

This 14-hour course in Maidstone is designed as a basic introduction to British Sign Language for both those who have an interest in learning just a little or for those who wish to use this course as a stepping stone to learning more of the language/before joining an exam course.

By the end of the course successful students will be able to:
- fingerspell names etc and use fingerspelling to support signing
- meet and greet others and exchange simple information
- sign numbers at least up to 20
- demonstrate at least 5 signs for each of the following topics: weather, colour, food and drink.

To gain maximum benefit students will need to practice between sessions.

How will I be taught?

Tutor will demonstrate and create a fun atmosphere with games and opportunities to practice story-telling with expression.

What do I need to bring with me?

No equipment required.

What can I do next?

BSL level 2 or a non-accredited BSL course at Level 2 but which does not lead to a qualification. Ask your tutor for advice or see our website - www.kentadulteducation.co.uk.

What do I need to join the course

No previous knowledge is required. The course is open to anybody with manual dexterity to sign with their hands.

About the Tutor: Keith French

Keith French is a qualified Specialist Social Worker / Care Manager with KCC Deaf Services and has just completed his Post Qualifying Specialist Social Work including the Practice Teacher Award. He achieved PTLLS level 4 in 2009. Keith joined AEC in 2008 and has taught BSL Level One every year. He has contributed this year to a new Social Work with Adults book focusing on people with sensory disabilities.

Keith enjoys teaching within his role as BSL Tutor and has recently learned and developed skills due to supervising a Social Work Student in his third year Degree placement relating to education theory eg Kolb, Petty, Cowley, Bloom and good practice such as differentiation, inclusion, tutoring, equality and diversity, reflective practice and teaching methods.
