About this course

This introductory course is for anyone who is considering a career teaching in further education or the training skills sector. On the course, you will study and practice basic teaching theories and methods. You will learn about teaching and learning approaches to support the different needs of students and groups, and you will learn how to assess students’ learning. You will understand responsibilities and relationships in education and training, in relation to legislation, equality, diversity, inclusivity and meeting the needs of learners. You will plan and deliver a short ‘micro-teach' of 20 minutes to the rest of the group. You will be required to produce short written assignments on all the aspects of teaching that you have studied. You can expect good support from your tutors and mentors to help complete your written tasks. Successful completion will require you to study and produce work outside the course sessions.

How will I be taught?

You will be taught and assessed in the classroom and will create a portfolio of assignments and evidence of learning. Delivery will be through formal taught sessions, tutor and peer observations, discussion, worksheets and resource books and home study. Your learning will be assessed on a regular basis to ensure you are making progress and getting the most from the course.

What do I need to bring with me?

Course materials will be supplied but you will need to bring a file to keep your assessed work for the City and Guilds moderation. You should also bring your own writing materials (pen, pencil, notebook etc.). Some programmes may use electronic portfolios.

What can I do next?

Following successful completion of this course, you can progress onto the Certificate in Education and Training City and Guilds Level 4.

What do I need to join the course

A pre-course assessment including English and Maths skills is held before enrolment to confirm that the course is suitable for you and that you have the best chance of success.
This course is for individuals who work, or want to work as teachers/trainers in the further education and training skills sector. The course is also useful for individuals who are not in a teaching/training role, but have a responsibility for a team, or who have just started a teaching/training CPD role.
