About this course

This unit/qualification is intended for those who wish to develop their knowledge in order to raise awareness of substance misuse and its consequences. Ideal for those currently working in the field of substance misuse, supporting people involved in substance misuse or working to prevent substance misuse.

By the end of the course successful students will:

- Know the harm associated with different substances and related behaviours
- Be aware of diversity in relation to substance use/misuse
- Understand why people misuse drugs/alcohol
- Be aware of own responses to issues in relation to substance use/misuse
- Use study skills within the learning process

This qualification does not lead directly to an employed role. However, the knowledge gained would be useful in a variety of settings, both professional, paraprofessional and personal, for example:
- supporting those working in Tier 1 services by providing an overview of the subject
- enhancing understanding of those already working therapeutically eg. counsellors, support workers, key workers
- benefiting parents and carers by virtue of increased knowledge and awareness
- helping and supporting others either in a voluntary or employed capacity.

How will I be taught?

The course will involve tutor input, group discussions and involves experiential elements that may involve some personal disclosure and associated personal developmental activities.

Students will create a portfolio of evidence towards seven learning outcomes. They will write learning reviews weekly which contain thoughts, feelings and reflections on tutor input and experiences during the course. There will be a requirement for completion of a written assignment containing 1,000 to 1,500 words. There is no external assessment (exam) for this qualification.

What do I need to bring with me?

A note pad and pen and a folder for your handouts is all that is required for the first session. The tutor will advise further once the course is underway.

What can I do next?

The next step could be the CPCAB’s Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills (CSK-L2) or an equivalent qualification. this course would also be an appropriate qualification to support entry onto Level 2 and/or Level 3 qualifications in health & social care, Level 3 Substance Misuse or Level 3 Life Coaching Studies.
