About this course

Thinking of writing a novel and unsure where to start? Then this course is for you!
Are you stuck part way through a novel and unsure how to progress and complete it? Then this is the course for you!

Working in a safe and supportive environment, you will be introduced to a range of methods for planning and organising your writing and given the opportunity to discuss the aspects of novel writing that most concern you.

By the end of this course, you will have
• discovered a variety of different ways to plan and develop your novel
• considered narrative techniques and, especially, your own ‘voice’ as a writer
• explored aspects of character, plot and sub-plot development
• identified literary techniques relevant to your chosen genre

This course involves reading and note taking, but also provides opportunities to write creatively, discuss the writing process, and constructively evaluate your own and others’ work.

How will I be taught?

Your tutor will create a supportive environment that encourages students to evaluate their own work and to give constructive criticism of other's work. If you have a disability and think it may affect your learning in the classroom, or using any of our other services, please speak to us in confidence as soon as possible. We will discuss options with you and do our best to provide the support you need.
Initial assessment will be carried out at the beginning of the course to assess individual skill level. The tutor will give feedback about your progress.

A good standard of written and spoken English is essential to fully participate in course.

This creative writing course is intended for people who have attended introductory courses or those with some prior experience of creative writing and who wish to develop these techniques to improve the ability of their writing to engage its intended readership.

About the Tutor: Declan O'Keeffe

Declan started teaching almost 20 years ago because he wanted to share his knowledge with others. Teaching adults provides Declan with great job satisfaction because the students are highly motivated.

He enjoys imparting his love of the subject, enabling students to fulfil their academic potential and pursue their career goals. He has achieved a BA, MA and PGCE.
