About this course

In a supportive, encouraging environment, you will be taught simple, effective techniques for creating your own drawings. Starting with pencil drawing, you will use tone to create a three dimensional effect and, week by week, will be guided through a series of art activities designed to make the subject both accessible and enjoyable. You will take inspiration from a range of primary and secondary resources. There will also be scope for you to explore your own areas of interest and begin to develop an individual approach to this rewarding subject.

This course will help to develop your skills and confidence in drawing in pencil and/or charcoal. The course will cover fundamental principles in drawing and you will be introduced to the work of a variety of artists.

By the end of this course you should be able to:
- plan a composition and consider spatial relationships
- draw more accurately from observation
- draw using tone to establish structure and create solidity of form
- draw using line and gesture
- start to develop a personal approach to drawing.

There is no set ‘homework’, but you are welcome to practise and do further work at home.
There is no qualification for this course.

There is limited parking on site, but there is a public car park nearby and on-street parking.

How will I be taught?

Each class will start with a practical demonstration followed by a question and answer session to ensure good understanding. You will receive plenty of one to one guidance, further demonstration where necessary and group discussions of work in progress.

What do I need to bring with me?

If you are a new student and have no materials please wait for your tutor's advice on what to buy. However all students should bring an A4 sketchbook of good quality cartridge paper, a 2B pencil and a rubber to the first session. If you do not have these already, please do not buy anything specifically for the course until you have checked with the Canterbury Centre, on 03000 41 2222 about a week before the start, that the course will be going ahead. Students will need to provide their own materials as the course progresses.

What can I do next?

The follow-on course next term or a further beginners course.

What do I need to join the course

This course is designed for students who have little or no previous experience of art, and help them to get started. The course is practical so a degree of manual dexterity is required.
